A centralized exchange operates several connected systems: order entry, matching, account ledgers, custody, market-data distribution and withdrawals. A status change in one system is not proof that every other step has finished. Understanding those boundaries helps explain partial fills, reserved balances and withdrawals that remain pending after trading is complete.
An order acknowledgement is not a completed trade
Coinbase Exchange's matching documentation distinguishes stages such as receiving an order, placing it on the book and completing it. A completed order can also have an unfilled remainder canceled. Read the fills and final status rather than treating one acknowledgement as evidence that the requested quantity was purchased.
A limit price constrains execution but does not guarantee a fill. Available counterparties and the venue's matching rules matter. A matching engine coordinates orders; it does not create liquidity simply by aggregating the exchange's custodial deposits.
Worked example: total, held and available quote balance
Consider a fictional exchange account holding $1,000 in quote currency. The user submits a limit buy for four tokens at a maximum price of $100 each. Assume the venue reserves the full limit amount and ignore fees.
| Event | Quote balance | Reserved | Available |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before order | $1,000 | $0 | $1,000 |
| Four-token order accepted | $1,000 | $400 | $600 |
| One token fills at $99 | $901 | $300 | $601 |
| Remaining three tokens canceled | $901 | $0 | $901 |
The user also holds the one purchased token after the fill. Its changing market value is not included in the quote-currency column. Actual venues can reserve fees or apply other holds, so this is an accounting illustration rather than a promise about a specific interface.
Coinbase's account API exposes balance, hold and available fields. Their presence makes reconciliation possible, but trading availability should still be distinguished from withdrawal eligibility and bank-funding settlement. Different products can define displayed balances differently.
A market-data screen can fall behind
The Coinbase WebSocket documentation warns that messages can be dropped or arrive out of order and describes sequence numbers for detecting gaps. A live-looking chart is therefore not proof that a consumer has reconstructed the current order book correctly.
For a fictional feed that promises consecutive sequence numbers, receiving 401 and then 403 indicates missing information about 402. Guessing what happened can produce an incorrect quote or inventory view. The appropriate recovery depends on that feed's documented snapshot and update procedure. This example explains data integrity; it is not a trading signal.
Withdrawal is another workflow
After a trade, the exchange may need to validate the request, check account restrictions, select funds, sign a transaction and broadcast it. The receiving network and service then have their own confirmation requirements. An internal pending record is different from a transaction visible on the correct blockchain.
Record the asset, network, destination, amount, fee and transaction identifier when available. A transaction hash should be checked on the matching network. If the platform has not broadcast anything, a blockchain explorer cannot independently verify an internal queue position.
Operational evidence worth keeping
- Order ID, requested quantity and price instructions.
- Individual fills, execution prices and charged fees.
- Balance changes and reasons for any remaining hold.
- Withdrawal status, network and broadcast transaction ID.
- Dated service notices when an outage affects execution or access.
None of these records alone certifies the exchange's solvency or insurance coverage. They answer narrower operational questions. This guide avoids unsupported throughput claims and explains how to reconcile the steps a user can actually observe.
